Familius

A familius (pl. "familii"), also called familiar, is an creature that forms a special bond with a particular witch or wizard. Familiars are an important aspect of magical lore in many cultures. In some traditions, familiars are considered to be spirits or demons that assist witches or wizards in their spell-casting.

The most common type of familius is magic animals. While some Magi have been known to have a spirit as a familius, this is rather uncommon.

While familiars are often associated with witchcraft and magic, it should be noted that familiars are not a common occurrence. While there are no exact numbers, it is assumed that between one in 500 and one in 1000 Magi have a familiar.

Trivia

• Depictions of witches with cats, toads or owls as familiars are inaccurate. Normal animals typically do not possess the intelligence required to become familiars. An exception are ravens, as their intelligence is different from most animals, and they do sometimes possess a connection to other worlds, even though they are not considered magic animals.
• Although there are species of magical apes, there is not a single case documented where an ape became a familiar. The reason for this is unknown.
