"Have you ever heard of a terrestrial animal that does not leave a trail? Perhaps. But have you heard of one that undoes trails?" - Celyddon Rosser, author of Enchanted Fauna

The Moon Deer, also known as the Night Deer or Shadow Deer, is a captivating and mysterious creature that belongs to the same family as the Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus). However, the Moon Deer possesses unique characteristics that set it apart from its relatives. With its striking dark fur and magnificent bright antlers, it casts an enchanting silhouette against the night sky.

The Moon Deer continues to captivate the imagination of magizoologists and nature enthusiasts alike, representing the enchantment and wonder of the twilight realm. As guardians of the night, these mystical creatures inspire us to embrace the hidden secrets of the moonlit world and remind us of the delicate harmony between light and darkness that exists in nature.

Description

Moon Deer have a graceful and slender build, similar to the Roe Deer. Their sleek fur is dark gray to black and shimmers in the moonlight, blending seamlessly with the shadows of the night. Their antlers, adorned with a mesmerizing white to silver hue, branch out elegantly, reflecting the ethereal glow of the moon.

Habitat and Behaviour

Moon Deer can be found throughout various regions of Europe and the Middle East. They are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the twilight hours and under the moonlit sky. Moon Deer have adapted to diverse habitats, including forests, woodlands, and even open grasslands, where they roam stealthily in search of food and shelter.

As true omnivores, Moon Deer have evolved a diverse diet. While they do consume leaves, buds, fruits, and nuts like their herbivorous counterparts, they have developed the remarkable ability to hunt smaller game. Moon Deer are known to prey on small birds, vertebrates, and even hares, showcasing their exceptional hunting prowess.

Magical Abilities

One of the most fascinating aspects of Moon Deer is their unique magical ability. They possess the remarkable power to stimulate the growth of deer vine (Viridis vitiis), a plant that remains invisible unless illuminated by moonlight. Moon Deer utilize this enchanting plant to construct intricate bower-like nests, carefully woven with deer vine tendrils. These nests provide protection and concealment for their young, ensuring their safety from prying eyes.

Moon Deer also cannot be easily tracked as they do not leave tracks. In fact, when a Moon Deer walks over the track of another animal, it will create a gap in the track, making it difficult to follow said track.

Use in Magic

Moon Deer hold a special place in magical lore and practices. Their antlers are highly sought after for their magical properties, believed to enhance spells related to moon energy, divination, and illusions. Moon Deer symbolism is also associated with mystery, nocturnal magic, and the balance between light and darkness.

Conservation Status

Due to their elusive nature and nocturnal habits, Moon Deer populations have remained relatively stable throughout history. However, with increasing human activities and habitat loss, their habitats are being encroached upon. It is important to promote conservation efforts to safeguard their natural habitats and maintain the delicate balance of their ecosystems.
