In the magic society, an individual's status as witch or wizard is indicated by their rank. Some of these ranks are received automatically, while others must be bestowed upon a person.

Primary Ranks

Primary ranks are assigned to individuals as they progress through their education and career.

Novice

Student who just begin their education at a magic school, or generally someone who is new to magic and just starts their training, is assigned the rank of Novice. The average Novice is between 10 and 12 years old. Novices are generally not permitted to use magic outside of the school or designated areas.

Apprentice

Students who pass the final exam of the mandatory 1st year receive the rank of Apprentice. As apprentices, they possess the necessary knowledge to control their abilites and could, if they choose, drop out of school again to live in the Mundane world. As students, they are learning under the guidance of more experienced wizards and witches.

Acolyte

Students who pass the 6th year exams receive are assigned the rank of Acolyte. They possess advanced knowledge beyond the basics of magic and are starting to specialize in a particular area.

Adept

After graduating from whatever school or training facility a student attends to, they are bestowed the rank of Adept. This means they have completed their training and are now skilled practicioners of magic, but haven't achieved mastery yet. They are now also allowed to teach younger Magi, typically as part of their training to become Masters.

Secondary Ranks

Secondary ranks are bestowed upon individuals once they fulfill certain conditions. This is usually through completing specialized training, demonstrating exceptional skill or making important contributions to the magic society.

Initiate

Initiates are people of Adept rank who started their training to become Masters. The term is also used for Adepts who enrolled in specific training, such as to become Wardens.

Master

A highly skilled and experienced wizard or witch who has achieved a high level of mastery in their craft may call themselves Master. In some cases, when the Master is achieved as part of a specialization, the title may be extended. For example, Master of Teaching, Master of Alchemy, Master of Warding, etc.

Grandmaster

Grandmaster is a title given only to those who have reached the highest level of mastery, achieved only by the most skilled and accomplished wizards and witches. It is a title that can not be trained for and must be bestowed upon someone by another Grandmaster as recognition of their achievements.

The title of Grandmaster can only be bestowed on witches and wizards above the age of 80.

Tertiary Ranks

Tertiary ranks are typically designations or titles assigned to an individual as part of their career or specific circumstances.

Neophyte

Neophytes are students who enrolled into a school late due to various circumstances. For example, an individual who enrolls into 1st grade at the age of 16 instead of 11, because their magic talent manifested later than usual, has the primary rank of Novice, but also the tertiary rank of Neophyte.

Magister

The title of Magister is assigned to individuals working for the magistry.

Grand Magister

A Grand Magister is a high-ranking individual who works for the magistry. They are usually the heads of their branch.

Inquisitor

Inquisitor is one of the rarest ranks among the Magi. Typically reserved for Warden, the rank is granted upon those who have made achievements or deeds worthy of a Grandmaster, but are not yet old enough to become one. Inquisitors will typically automatically receive the rank of Grandmaster on their 80th birthday.
