Flying Broomstick

Broomsticks are a common means of transportation in Europe, Eastern Europe and the USA. Enchanted brooms are capable of flight; speed and maneuverability are dependent on the quality of the enchantnemts and materials used.

The concept of using broomsticks for transportation has been around since the 17th century, making it relatively new for Mundane standards. The belief of witches flying on broomsticks, or other similar objects, such as pitchforks, came up during the witch hunts of the 15th and 16th centuries in Europe. At some point this was taken up by Magi out of spite, who began enchanting their first brooms.

It should be noted that, in earlier times, efforts were made to make broomsticks look exactly like brushwood brooms. To fly them, they were wrapped with fabric or leather, or a saddle was attached. This was done because riding on a broom without saddle is, in fact, very uncomfortable and becomes painful quickly. Modern brooms still keep that shape, but are typically only similar in appearance to brooms. Modern flying broomsticks come with saddles attached.

Trivia

• Kathrin and Lycia both own flying broomsticks of the model Tiro Mark 7 by Nubu-Astradis, which have a maximum speed of 37 miles per hour (60 km/h) and are considered excellent choices for beginners. The Tiru Mark 7 can be upgraded to 75 miles per hour (120 km/h), which they eventually do.
• Grace Summerdale flies an antique model which is over 250 years old. She prefers it for its side saddle, which she considers more comfortable than modern saddles.
• Radimir Zvonimirovich flies a Trŭnochistach ("Thornsweeper"), a racing broom made by the Bulgarian manufacturer Buriana Maistori.
• Adler-Wilcox is a renowned brand for racing and sport brooms, comparable to Ferrari or Lamborgini. Their current flagship model, the Comet Mk. III starts at 4,100 Thalers in its basic configuration.
