Burning Shrub

From Powers Within
Burning Shrub

The Burning Shrub, scientifically known as Fulgurfrutex luminis, is a small shrub renowned for its radiant red leaves that emit their own soft luminescence. Indigenous to the geothermic valleys of the Wildlands, this plant has drawn significant attention from herbalists, alchemists, and particularly nightwitches, who find its properties invaluable for various magical applications.

Appearance and Habitat

The Burning Shrub typically stands no taller than one meter and tends to grow in clusters. It is characterized by its dark, almost obsidian-like branches that support small, red leaves, shimmering with an otherworldly glow. It is not actually burning, and it does not actually possess fire attributes. Its name come from its appearance in darkness. Its native habitat is the geothermic valleys of the Wildlands, where the temperature and volcanic activity appear to influence its growth and luminescent properties.

Cultivation and Care

Due to its non-Earthly origin, the Burning Shrub requires a specific set of conditions to thrive. Attempts to cultivate it outside the geothermic valleys have failed, resulting in only small, sickly plants. Optimal growth conditions include high ambient temperatures, nutrient-rich volcanic soil, and limited exposure to direct sunlight. However, there is some unknown factor that is required for healthy development. Its ability to generate its own light seems to negate the need for extensive photosynthesis, making it a rather low-maintenance plant when its fundamental needs are met.

Uses in Magic

The leaves of the Burning Shrub are a critical component in various magical rituals and spells. When ground into a powder, they can serve as a potent ingredient for illumination spells or to enchant objects with a permanent glow. Nightwitches often use these leaves in rituals designed to manipulate or channel energy, as the plant itself seems to function as a natural conduit for magical forces. Moreover, the radiant leaves are employed in the crafting of "Witches' Lanterns," tools that guide nightwitches through dark environments without revealing their positions.

Precautions

While the Burning Shrub is not inherently toxic, improper handling or use in magic can lead to unforeseen consequences. When combined with certain reagents, the leaves can create unstable magical effects, such as unintended explosions of light or heat. As such, only skilled practitioners are advised to harvest or utilize this plant. Due to its non-Earthly origins, the ecological impact of introducing it to new environments is not fully understood, warranting additional caution.

For these reasons, the Burning Shrub is considered a controlled substance within the magical community, and unauthorized harvesting or use is generally frowned upon, if not outright prohibited.
